Google AI visibility

Google AI visibility for UK businesses

Google AI visibility is whether your business is named in the AI-generated parts of Google's results, such as an AI Overview, when a customer asks a question in your area. Ranking in the conventional results does not guarantee it. Findable records Google AI Overview where Google shows one, alongside the ChatGPT and Gemini answers it scores.

The definition

What Google AI visibility means

Google now answers some searches with an AI-generated summary, an AI Overview, placed above the conventional list of results. For a customer asking who to call, that overview may name two or three businesses and cite the sources it drew on. Google AI visibility is whether your business is one of the names in it.

It is not the same measurement as a ranking. A ranking is a position in a list; an overview is a short generated answer with a handful of names in it, shown for some queries and not others. The same question can produce an overview one day and none the next.

Findable treats it as one of the surfaces a customer might see, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini, and records it as part of the same AI visibility measurement.

Ranking in Google does not guarantee a place in the overview

Google's AI experiences are built on its search systems, and Google's own documentation says the foundations of conventional search still matter. That is why the two are related, and why one does not guarantee the other.

A conventional result

A position in a list

  • Your page is indexed and ranks for the query.
  • The customer sees a title, a link and a snippet, and chooses.
  • Ten or so results share the page.

An AI Overview

A name in a generated answer

  • Google composes a short answer from sources it read.
  • Two or three businesses are named, with cited sources beneath.
  • It is not shown for every query, and it can vary between runs.

Because the overview is built from what Google's systems can read, the work that helps a page be understood in conventional search, clear pages, accurate business information, a crawlable site, is not wasted. It is the same evidence, read for a different purpose.

Because the overview names only a few businesses and appears only sometimes, a ranking is not a result. The only way to know whether you are in it is to ask the question and record what Google showed. Findable does not claim to know a separate Google AI ranking checklist.

Why Google AI may show competitors instead

Possible reasons, not a hidden rule

  • A competitor's pages state the service and the place more specifically for that question.
  • Their business information agrees across their site, their Google Business Profile and the sources Google read.
  • Your evidence exists but is thin, inconsistent, or hard for Google's systems to read.
  • An overview drew on a source that names them and not you.
  • No overview appeared for that question at all, which is a different result from being absent.

These are explanations to test by recording the questions, not a confirmed Google ranking factor. Answers can vary between runs.

What a business can control

The evidence Google's systems read

  1. 01

    Your website

Pages that say specifically what you do and where, in the words customers use, and that Google can crawl and read.

  2. 02

    Your Google Business Profile

A complete, accurate profile whose name, services and area agree with the website.

  3. 03

    The sources that describe you

Directories, profiles and references that say the same things about the business as the site does.

  4. 04

    The questions you measure

An approved set of customer-style questions for your trade and town, recorded before and after the work.

For a local business, that means the same service, place and identity evidence the local-business guide describes.

How Findable records Google AI

Recorded where Google shows one, scored where it can be

In a Findable audit, ChatGPT and Gemini are the scored engines: every approved question is asked on both and the answers are counted. Google AI Overview is recorded where Google shows one. When an overview appears for a question, Findable notes whether your business was named and which sources were cited; when none appears, that is recorded as no overview, not as an absence.

That distinction is kept deliberately. An overview does not appear for every query, so counting it like the scored engines would turn Google's decision not to show one into a mark against the business. The methodology sets out the definitions of named, cited and listed that apply on every surface.

  1. Record

For each approved question, note whether Google showed an AI Overview and who it named.

  2. Find gaps

Compare what the overview named and cited with what your site and profiles say.

  3. Improve evidence

Make the service, place and business facts clearer wherever Google's systems read them.

  4. Record again

The same questions after four weeks, recorded the same way.

Limitations. Overviews are shown for some queries and not others, can change between runs, and are one part of a results page a customer may or may not read. Findable records what appeared; it does not control it.

Help with Google AI visibility

Part of one AI visibility service, not a separate product

Findable is an AI visibility service for UK local businesses. It measures whether a business is named for the questions its customers ask, on ChatGPT and Gemini, with Google AI Overview recorded where Google shows one; identifies where the evidence is missing or inconsistent; works on the website, profile and supporting sources; and records the same approved questions again after four weeks.

Google AI visibility is one of the surfaces that work covers. A business does not need a separate Google project: the pages, profile and consistent facts that help Google's systems read it are the same ones the rest of the measurement depends on.

Questions businesses ask

Google AI visibility, answered plainly

What is Google AI visibility?

Whether a business is named in the AI-generated parts of Google's results, such as an AI Overview, when a customer asks a question in its area. It is distinct from ranking in the conventional list of results, although the two are related.

Does ranking on the first page of Google mean I will appear in an AI Overview?

No. A good ranking can help a page be read, but an AI Overview names only a few businesses or sources, is not shown for every query, and can vary. Findable records whether one appeared and who it named rather than assuming from a ranking.

Does Google AI use the same signals as traditional Google search?

Google's AI experiences are built on its search systems, and Google's own documentation says the foundations of conventional search remain relevant. That does not make the two identical: an overview is a generated answer with a handful of names in it, not a ranked list. Findable does not claim to know a separate Google AI ranking checklist.

Can Findable get my business into Google AI Overviews?

No one can force inclusion. Findable measures whether an overview appeared and whether you were named, improves the evidence Google's systems can read about your business, and records the same questions again after four weeks.

How does Findable score Google AI?

It does not score it in the same way as ChatGPT and Gemini. ChatGPT and Gemini are the scored engines in the audit; Google AI Overview is recorded where Google shows one, so the result is never counted for a question where no overview appeared.

Is this the same as Gemini?

No. Gemini is Google's assistant and is one of the two scored engines in a Findable audit. AI Overviews are the generated summaries inside Google Search results. Both are Google products; they are measured differently.
